Frequently asked questions
01What is a public IP address?
Your public IP address is the address your Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns to your connection. It is the address that websites and online services see when you visit them — not your device's local (private) IP address inside your home or office network.
02What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses in dot-decimal notation (e.g. 203.1.2.3) and has roughly 4.3 billion possible addresses — a pool that is now exhausted. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses in hexadecimal (e.g. 2001:db8::1) and provides effectively unlimited addresses. Most modern devices and networks support both; your ISP determines which protocol your connection uses.
03What is reverse DNS?
Reverse DNS (rDNS) maps an IP address back to a hostname — the inverse of a normal DNS lookup. ISPs and hosting providers usually configure rDNS for their IP ranges. If your IP has a reverse DNS entry, it often shows your ISP's name or data-centre hostname. No entry is common for residential connections.
04Do you log or store my IP address?
No. This tool makes a single request to our server to read your connection's IP and reverse DNS, then returns them immediately. We do not log, store, or share your IP address or any other data from this page. The browser-side details (user agent, screen size, language) are read locally and never sent to our servers.
